Veterans Day events planned for Fairfield, neighboring towns

The nation will pay its respects to those who served on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Several organizations have planned events to recognize veterans in Southeast Iowa throughout the week.
FAIRFIELD
The Fairfield High School will host an assembly to honor veterans at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 in the FHS Auditorium. All veterans are encouraged to attend. Doors open at 8:15 p.m.
On Friday, Nov. 10, Hy-Vee will honor veterans with a free breakfast from 6-10 a.m. Veterans and active-duty military personnel will receive 15 percent off their groceries that day.
On Veterans Day itself, Saturday, Nov. 11, Fairfield residents will have a couple of chances to honor veterans. The Jefferson County Freedom Rock will be dedicated at a ceremony at 10 a.m. outside the Jefferson County Courthouse. Later that day from 5-6 p.m., John Miller will host a panel of veterans to speak at the Fairfield Public Library.
PEKIN
Everyone is invited to the Veterans Program at Pekin on Friday, Nov. 10. Col. Dan Maeder will be the guest speaker. Coffee and refreshments will be at 8 a.m., with the program beginning at 9 in the high school gym.
Col. Meador is a native of Richland and a 1987 graduate of Pekin High School. He is in his 35th year of serving the Iowa National Guard.
KEOKUK COUNTY
The Keokuk County Veterans Affairs office and Commissioners are serving a Veterans Appreciation Supper on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Keokuk County Expo at 5 p.m. Veterans and a guest are invited to enjoy a delicious meal. No RSVP needed.
There will be a Veterans Brunch at the Carl Craft Civic Center in Hedrick on Sunday, Nov. 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All Veterans and one guest eat free. All others freewill offering.
