Washington ban on fireworks tabled
Aug. 20, 2020 1:00 am
WASHINGTON - The city of Washington is no closer to banning fireworks after the council tabled the second reading of an ordinance that would make exploding them within city limits illegal.
Tuesday night, Mayor Jaron Rosien said he felt it was a lose-lose situation and whichever way the council voted there was no way to win.
While some members of the public support the proposed ordinance, others would like to see them remain legal.
Council member Fran Stigers said he spoke to 25 constituents who were all opposed to the ordinance and told him they would continue to launch fireworks anyway.
Member Steven Gault reported similarly, saying the current ordinance already has limitations and by making them completely illegal, the council will not be able to stop people completely.
'The more you tell people you can't do something, the more they're going to do it,” he said.
Several residents also spoke up about the proposed ordinance.
Chris Lucas said she was opposed to banning fireworks because for her, they are an outlet to celebrate the Fourth of July and a way to spend time with each other.
'There's a lot of kids that love fireworks. I'm a kid at heart- I love them. I just ask that everybody here thinks about that,” she said.
Residents were opposed to fireworks for a variety of reasons including the noise and effects they have on specific groups. Evie Richardson said for dogs, veterans and people on the autism spectrum, the loud noises can be devastating and a hindrance to bringing in new members to the community.
The council decided to table the discussion until the next meeting due to the absence of member Elaine Moore. The council wanted to ensure every member had a say in the possible banning.
