WASHINGTON — Two vacant at-large city council seats are up for special elections on Tuesday, Aug. 6 in Washington County.
Who’s on the ballot:
The first race, in Washington, will see voters choose between Jennifer Durst, Ken Schroeder, and Rob Meyer, any of whom would be newcomers to municipal politics. The winner will earn the former council seat of Millie Youngquist, who vacated it in May after winning a late-April special election to become mayor.
The second, in Brighton, pits former City Council Member Cathy Rich against Former Mayor Robert Farley. Rich has been endorsed by the outgoing council member vacating the seat, David Pratt, who said she was well equipped to shore up municipal finances. But Farley’s been endorsed by the fire department, representatives of which said the former mayor was a “fair and reasonable man,” before citing a history of funding disputes between Rich and fire department heads.
Where and when to vote:
In Washington, despite the at-large nature of the election, county officials said they’d consolidated the race into two precincts.
- Residents of the city’s first and second wards, roughly the north half of the city, will vote at the Washington Community YMCA, 520 West Fifth Street, in Washington.
- Residents of wards three and four will vote at the Washington County Fairgrounds, 611 South Highway 1, in Washington.
All voters in the city of Brighton will cast their ballots in the same place: the Brighton Community Building, at 100 East Washington Street, in Brighton.
Under state law, polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Under federal law, voters who are already in line by 8 p.m. are still allowed to cast a ballot, even if it’s handed to them or filled out after the polls officially close.
What to bring with you:
According to the Washington County Auditor’s Office, preregistered voters are required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot.
Voters who are not preregistered — such as voters registering to vote on election day — and voters changing precincts must also provide proof of residence. A voter who is unable to provide a valid form of ID or proof of residence has the following options.
- Have their identity and/or residence attested by another registered voter in the district. Election Day Registrant attesters must provide an approved form of identification.
- Prove their identity and residence using Election Day Registration documents.
- Cast a provisional ballot and provide proof of identity/residence at the county auditor’s office by or before noon on Monday, Aug. 12
For additional information about providing proof of identity and/or residence visit https://sos.iowa.gov/voterID or phone (319) 653-7717.
Any voter who is physically unable to enter a polling place has the right to vote in the voter’s vehicle. For further information, please contact the county auditor’s office at the telephone number or email address listed below.
