Washington church prepares to serve 800 meals at annual Christmas Day dinner

WASHINGTON — On Christmas Day, when many kitchens fall quiet, Washington First Assembly of God Church will be bustling as volunteers prepare hundreds of meals for neighbors across the community.

The church will host its annual Community Christmas Dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Christmas Day, continuing a long-running tradition focused on hospitality and service. This year’s event will provide an estimated 800 meals.

“We will be serving 800 meals on Christmas Day,” Pastor Dave Watson said. “This is done in partnership with local businesses and individuals in and around Washington.”

The dinner has grown steadily over the years. In 2020, the church served more than 300 meals through a drive-thru format. Two years later, the effort expanded to 450 meals.

This year’s menu includes ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, rolls and dessert. Organizers aim to meet people where they are, offering dine in, carryout and delivery options for Washington residents.

“Come celebrate Christmas with us. We will be hosting our Annual Christmas Dinner,” the church said in its invitation to the community.

To receive a meal, reservations are required. Residents can call or text 319-381-2591 or email wfaevent@gmail.com. Guests should provide their name, preferred meal option, number of meals requested, address and phone number. Volunteers will confirm reservations by phone or email.

After years of growth and adaptation, the Christmas dinner remains rooted in its mission of inclusion and care. As organizers emphasize each year, everyone is welcome.
