Washington City Council tables discussion on proposed speed limit adjustment
Apr. 23, 2020 1:00 am
WASHINGTON - Adjusting a speed limit and extending sidewalks were the big discussion items for the city council Tuesday night.
A first reading of an ordinance that would adjust the speed limit along West Fifth Street was eventually tabled after no conclusion could be reached.
According to a memo sent to the council by Engineering Tech Keith Heinkel, the proposal would be to lower the speed limit by 5 mph from North C Avenue continuing until the road curves near the parking lot for the Kewash Trail. The new speed limits would be 25 mph and 35 mph. Currently the speed limit on the curve is 40 mph and that would not change.
It was also proposed to add a four-way stop at West Fifth Street and North D Avenue due to the projected increased traffic from the new YMCA building.
Several council members spoke up in opposition of the length of the 35 mph zone and requested time to drive the area and before making a final decision. The item was tabled.
Back on North D and West Seventh Street, a new sidewalk will be going in as council approved the city to extend the sidewalks to lead up to the entrance of the new YMCA.

The proposal is in anticipation of heavy traffic to the new YMCA building located along West Fifth Street. A speed limit adjustment is also being proposed that would begin at North Avenue C and continue down West Fifth Street until the road curves. No decision has been made and the council tabled the item at Tuesday night's meeting.
