Washington Community School District buildings receiving repairs over summer break
Jun. 18, 2020 1:00 am
WASHINGTON - School may be out for summer but buildings in the Washington Community School District will be getting an upgrade over the next few months to prepare for students return in fall.
Superintendent Willie Stone said as general precaution each classroom will have sanitation stations, clear barriers at all offices and fogging machines have been purchased for every building. The rooms will be cleaned, fogged then taped shut to ensure any remnants of germs are destroyed.
Stewart Elementary School, 821 North Fourth Avenue
Preschool-second grade students in the district will be welcomed back with a new roof on the 1992 addition to the building and the par-Kay flooring in rooms 2, 15 and 16 replaced. Floor slabs in first grade rooms 33, 34 and 37 also will be repaired and new carpet will be installed in those three classrooms as well as rooms 35 and 36.
The north side of the gym and around the office entrance will see some tuckpointing work done and a new door will be put on the boiler room. On the second floor, three leaky windows on the south end of the building will be replaced.
Outside, various bricks on the building are being replaced due to bad mortar. The bad material is pushing the bricks out, which could be a safety hazard. The building now resembles a game of tetris, he said, where various bricks are missing as crews check for weak spots but will replace them with fresh mortar and new bricks.

Third through fifth-grade students also will have a new roof over their heads in the 1992 addition to the building and the gym floor structure will have been repaired from past termite damage.
An abatement of ceilings and floor times in the 1962 addition, rooms 4,5,8 and 9, will be performed. The rooms will receive new suspended ceilings, light fixtures and flooring.
New roof drains will be installed on the gym to fix the problem of cast iron pipes leaking in the walls. Stucco will be repaired on the 1962 and 1992 additions as well as tuckpointing small areas of concern.
Every interior door will receive new locks, the boiler room a new door and all restrooms in the 1962 addition will receive restroom ventilation fans.

The middle school will be receiving the least amount of work this year, Stone said. One classroom floor will be abated, a new roof has already been put on the shop section and evaluation of a leak around the chimney in the stage area will be monitored. The stage is used as a classroom for the band program, he said.

Repairs on the 1962 edition of the school include new door locks on all interior doors, a new roof on the whole building excluding the gym, removal of an old walk-in cooler in the kitchen, upgrading bathroom fixtures to touchless facilities and plumbing repairs in the south end of the building, finish installing a new emergency lighting system and replace restroom ventilation fans.
On the exterior of the gym, a crack in precast corner on the exterior will be repaired and natural rust stains on the precast panels will be cleaned. A leak in the media center and locker rooms will be investigated and a new wireless system will be installed in the baseball press box.
The intercom system for the entire building also will be replaced.
At case field, doors will be replaced and repairs will be performed on the main building in preparation for electronic locks.
Stewart Elementary School at 821 North Fourth Avenue in Washington will be receiving several updates over the summer. Most noticeable will be bricks on the extior of the building. Superintendent Willie Stone said the mortar is rotting and pushing out several bricks, leading to them being pulled and replaced. (Gretchen Teske/ The Union)
