Washington Community School District sees 80 percent completion in required learning
May. 14, 2020 1:07 pm
WASHINGTON - Washington High School students have been required to partake in online learning this semester and as many as 80 percent have completed the work, according to district superintendent Willie Stone.
At the school board meeting Wednesday night, Stone said those numbers could fluctuate and potentially rise as students still have time to complete their assignments before the semester ends.
'It's hard to tell that because a student may take all next week to watch everything and get everything done in a class,” he said. The guardians of students who have not been showing interest in school work have been contacted.
Overall, 46 districts in the state required online learning, he said. Locally the Washington Community School District and Mid-Prairie School District were the only two Stone said.
Looking forward to the summer, summer school still is in question, he said. The format has not been decided because administration is currently trying to decide how to close out the school year and complete the return to learn plan for the fall.
The finalized plans are due to the state Dept. of Education July 1, he said. Administration will need to submit a plan for continuous learning, hybrid learning and submit final plans.
School is expected to begin on Aug. 23 in the fall, but if there is a closure all students in the district will be required to learn remotely, he said. Administration is currently working to ensure all students have access to an iPad or laptop to complete coursework.
Seniors in the district can expect to wrap up their school year with a prom on July 10 and graduation July 12, Stone said. Should social distancing practices still be in place, the prom will be canceled and graduation will take place virtually.
