WASHINGTON - After experiencing a term of virtual learning for students, the Washington Community School District is considering creating its own virtual school for the future.
Curriculum Director Veta Thode presented information regarding the middle and high school student's virtual learning during the Wednesday night school board meeting.
There are 82 students using Apex virtual school. Of those students 59 have completed 186 credits. There are 23 students that have not completed any work.
Thode said the students and parents have been contacted weekly to remind them of assignments.
In the future, Thode said they would like to consider creating their own virtual program, using Mid-Prairie's virtual school as an example.
'This option is meeting the needs of a lot of students,” Thode said. 'Some students don't fit into the regular school setting.”
Thode said there are six schools in Iowa who have their own virtual school.
There would be an intake application process, and Thode said they have many of the tools necessary for the program.
If the program draws students from other districts, Thode said it would work exactly like open enrollment.
