WASHINGTON — Washington County officials say they plan to participate in an Iowa State Association of Counties initiative to prevent human trafficking.
The organization has asked counties to commit to “learn something” and “do something” about human trafficking, using materials it provides to members, including flyers, videos, sample resolutions and training contacts.
“It is a voluntary program whose mission is to work toward preventing and eliminating human trafficking in Iowa,” a letter from the organization to officials said. “We believe having every Iowa county engaged in this effort can make an enormous impact,”
Washington County Auditor Dan Widmer said it was a noble goal.
“They are really encouraging counties to become involved in this effort,” he said. “As a citizen of Washington County, I would hope that you would.”
Washington County Board of Supervisors Chair Richard Young said he agreed it should be a local priority.
“I would think that we would do that, especially with the four-lane out here,” he said. “It’s a traffic way for this.”
It’s not yet clear exactly how county will participate. The letter from ISAC suggested social media campaigns, local paper editorials and county proclamations. Washington County officials said they would explore their options and discuss a plan for action at a future meeting.
