Washington County property taxes must be paid by Sept. 30

Washington County first half real estate and mobile home taxes are due Sept. 1 and must be paid by Sept. 30 to avoid penalty.

On Oct. 1, a penalty of 1½ percent per month, rounded to the nearest whole dollar with a $1 minimum, will attach to the unpaid tax bill.

In order to reduce wait times and to comply with social distancing standards, county Treasurer Jeff Garrett strongly discourages in-person payments.

Payments should be mailed to the Washington County Treasurer, P.O. Box 889, Washington, IA 52353; put in the drop box located by the west door of the courthouse or paid online at www.iowatreasurers.org.

Statement coupons must accompany payments.

Payments sent by mail must have a U.S. Postal Service postmark date of Sept. 30 or before, to avoid penalty. Predated checks are not accepted as a substitute for the proper postmark.
