Washington extends time for vacuuming up leaves

WASHINGTON - Don't worry, there's still time to have your leaves picked up in Washington.
The city leaf vac is running later into the season this year. Normally, program would be complete before Thanksgiving.
This week and next week, the city employees will work their way around town a few more times before calling it quits for the season, said Washington maintenance and construction Superintendent JJ Bell.
He said the quick drop of leaves and a short period of heavy rainfall caused the crew to fall behind.
As of Monday 141 loads had been picked up.
Though this is later than usual, previous seasons have caused the leaf vac to continue through December, but Bell doesn't believe that will happen this year.
If residents still have leaves after the program is complete, they can still haul leaves, tree trimmings or any other grown organic matter to the Wastewater Treatment Plan and Yard Waste Center.
The Washington leaf vac program is continuing into December. The program is a free opportunity for residents to have their fall leaves picked up. (Caitlin Yamada/ The Union)
