WASHINGTON — In an innovative effort to foster stronger community ties and promote fire safety awareness among the youth, the Washington Fire Department has collaborated with Stewart School for a series of engaging interactions this year.
The initiative, spearheaded by Mr. Marsden, Principal at Stewart Elementary School, saw members of the Washington Fire Department warmly welcomed into the school to greet students. These encounters, not prompted by fire alarms, provided an invaluable opportunity for children to interact with firefighters in a non-emergency setting.
“The goal behind the program is to get youth to see Firefighters in their daily life," said Mr. Marsden, emphasizing the importance of normalizing the presence of firefighters outside of emergency situations.
Andy Miller, who leads the Fire Prevention Program with the Washington Fire Department, expressed delight in the positive reception of the initiative.
"I’m not sure who enjoys this more, the youth or the Firefighters," said Miller, highlighting the mutual enthusiasm displayed during the interactions.
During these visits, firefighters engaged with students, distributing stickers, and engaging in meaningful conversations about fire safety. The presence of Marshall from Paw Patrol added an extra layer of excitement and familiarity for the children.
“This event with Stewart School allows more contact to talk with the youth about what to do in a fire or any scary situation," said Miller, emphasizing the broader objective of extending fire prevention education beyond the confines of designated awareness weeks.
The collaboration between the Washington Fire Department and Stewart School underscores a proactive approach to community engagement and underscores the importance of early education in fire safety practices.
