WASHINGTON — A mix of student council representatives turned over some of the first shovels full of dirt in a construction project at Washington’s high school Wednesday afternoon.
The photo-op celebrated the work now underway for major renovations to the building which will extend its east wing with classrooms to host grades six through eight, expand its gymnasium, renovate over 50,000 square feet, and build a two-story addition for the building.
The project is financed by a $25 million bond, approved by voters in September of 2021. Superintendent Willie Stone said it was a big deal.
“This is a great day for the Washington Community School District,” he said. “The school board, staff, and community members have worked hard to bring this new building and renovation project to life. I am proud our community supported giving our students first-rate facilities.”
Carl A. Nelson Project Manager Jordan Hutcheson said initial utility and grading work started in March, and that the construction phase would last through 2024. After that, crews will start work on the renovation phase, expected to wrap up sometime in 2025.
“We’re excited to be here, we’re very honored to be a part of this project and to be working with the school district,” Hutcheson said. “We’re just excited to get going and get this project done.”
