WASHINGTON — The city of Washington is raising money for the medical needs of a K-9 named Dex, according to several statements released by its police department.
With the K-9 program’s funding entirely based on donations, officials said they were seeking cash to complete a “crucial dental procedure” for the dog, which has worked with the department for almost five years.
“The WPD K-9 Program has been in operation for more than thirty years and relies entirely on donations to provide for Dex’s care and upkeep,” the department said in a Facebook post. “Let’s come together to ensure our four-legged partner can continue making a ‘paws-itive’ impact.”
In a news release shared this week, the law enforcement agency said it had also received a grant from nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. to cover other medical insurance costs for the animal.
In an email, Police Chief Jim Lester said the policy would be helpful, but did not cover Dex’s preexisting dental needs.
“The annual medical reimbursement insurance policy, administered by Trupanion, will cover illnesses, injuries — including those sustained in the line of duty — diagnostic testing and therapies,” said the news release. “The plan allows the freedom to use any licensed veterinarian, specialty center, or emergency hospital in the United States.”
