Washington police remind residents of firework ban
Jun. 27, 2022 12:15 am
With July 4th around the corner, the Washington Police Department reminds residents that use of consumer fireworks in the city is prohibited.
“It’s important for everyone to be respectful of their neighbors and others in the community,” Washington Police Chief Jim Lester said. “Pets and people can have adverse reactions to the loud noise caused by some fireworks.”
In 2021, the police department received 53 firework complaints. Lester said those calling with reports should be willing to testify on the matter.
“Many of these complaints are from anonymous sources, and when officers arrive in the area, the persons responsible are no longer using fireworks,” he said. “It’s important for those making the complaints to identify themselves and be prepared to identify the person shooting off the fireworks. Without someone willing to testify to what they saw, the officers cannot issue citations for fireworks violations they do not observe.”
Residents with fireworks complaints can call the department’s non-emergency number at 319-653-2107.
