The La Onda Multicultural Group at Washington High School created and decorated a Día de los Muertos “ofrenda” in the garden area of school on Friday, where it will remain until Nov. 3, in honor of the holiday.
Group Adviser Heather Lujano said over 20 students took part in the project.
“In our meetings we had been planning what they wanted to do to recognize the Día de los Muertos holiday,” she said. “The traditions vary from different regions in Latin America … the students are from different cultures. It wasn’t that they decided ‘This yes, this no,’ it was a collaborative effort from students from different areas.”
Lujano said she was proud to take part in the group’s celebration.
“It’s a beautiful tradition and a way for people to work through the loss of loved ones,” she said. “I’m excited to be a part of the cultural group that wants to continue the tradition.”
