WAYLAND ? The City of Wayland has tapped Wemiga Waste to take over garbage collection for the city.
The council was approached by Lynn Whaley, of Whaley Waste Systems, earlier this spring to see if the city would consider opening up bids for the city?s solid waste contract. Luke Waste Management had handled the city?s waste and recycling.
Whaley had proposed using a trash bin service rather than the current bag system, but the council elected to bid out the contract both ways. Wemiga was the low bid on bags.
During the city?s meeting Wednesday night, the council accepted easements for the water main project on Cummings Street.
Jim Warner, project engineer, told the council at the June 2 meeting that there wasn?t enough room on city land for the new water main and that easements would have to be obtained. With residents surrendering the easements, the city was able to continue with the project and set a public hearing to award bids for the project on Wednesday, July 6, at 7:30 p.m., at City Hall.
The council?s jam-packed agenda also included approving a resolution to certify a nuisance mowing lean against 206 South Pearl St., as well as placing lot nine of the North Plains Subdivision up for bid for a spec house. City Clerk Beverly Conrad said the city is hoping to find an interested party to develop that portion of the subdivision.
In other business, the council:
? Authorized the agreement for attorney services with Mike Vance effective July 1, 2016.
? Approved a $0.50 raise increase for full-time city employees.
? Received a $2,000 grant from DNR to remove asbestos from two main street properties.
? Approved the nomination of Scott McNevin to the Zoning Commission.
? Authorized the mayor to sign the Combined Billing Services Agreement.
? Approved building permits for WACO Schools to reroof and reside the building at 706 North Pearl St.; and Leslie Hole to reroof the house and garage at 406 East Front St.
The next meeting of the Wayland City Council will be held on Wednesday, July 6, at 7:30 p.m., at City Hall.
