Wayland considers pilot program for city?s lagoon

WAYLAND ? The Wayland City Council is currently in discussions over a pair of requests from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources? (IDNR) regarding the city?s sewer lagoon. However, the city wants to take it one step further and conduct a pilot program to not only meet, but also exceed the requests, said Bev Conrad, Wayland city clerk.

Consequently, the city council met with Jim Warner, of Warner Engineering Associates of Mt. Pleasant, during the council?s regular meeting Wednesday night to discuss further action.

The IDNR has requested a feasibility and facility study, Conrad said, and the city is also looking for some improvements in aeration at the lagoon.

Council members also approved the purchase of a replacement jacket for one of the community?s firefighters. The jacket will be purchased for $1,190 from Sandry Fire Supply.

In other agenda items, the council approved a resolution to certify a nuisance mowing lien against real estate. Conrad said a $130 lien would be added to the property tax bill for the property.

Finally, the council needed to approve a revision to the personnel policy manual. The revision is needed because the city switched to a different employee health insurance policy from Wellmark, the city?s health insurance carrier. Conrad said the change was made ?to help keep costs in line.?

The council will meet again in regular session Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 7:30 p.m., at city hall.
