WAYLAND ? It may have not been on the agenda, but the most talked about item during the latest meeting of the Wayland City Council was the mystery of the broken window at the entrance of City Hall.
The exterior windowpane was shattered, stemming from a small hole at the bottom of the glass.
City Clerk Beverly Conrad said she believed the window was fine when the building was locked at 5 p.m. But when she came back at 7 p.m., to unlock the door for the for the 7:30 p.m., council meeting, the window was shattered. City officials were unsure how the break occurred, but will be looking into it.
Mystery aside, the council did unanimously vote to purchase a new acrylic backboard for the damaged basketball hoop in West Park.
The cost for the backboard was $550 and was purchased through Goalsetter out of Lynnville.
Public Works Gas Superintendent Barry Leichty said the basketball hoops were installed about 15 years ago and are still used a lot. Leichty said the public works staff painted new lines on the basketball court earlier this week.
Councilman Scott Shumaker concurred with Leichty saying, ?One thing you do see, especially near basketball season? is kids out on the court.
During the meeting, the council also heard an update from Jim Warner, of Warner Engineering, in Mt. Pleasant. Warner was contracted to map out and ?get the scope? of upcoming street projects. Warner said he had been working on plans for Adams, Front and Pearl Streets.
In regards to Pearl Street, Warner said he would like to do some more exploring and take a look at making it a white top road instead of just doing an asphalt overlay. A white top road is when concrete is poured over an asphalt base.
When asked if concrete would hold up better than asphalt, Warner responded, ?always.?
In other business, the council:
? Set Trick or Treat night for Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
? Approved the annual finance report for FYE June 30, 2015, for publication and filing with the State Auditor.
? Approved the Fiscal Year 2014/15 Annual Urban Renewal Report.
? Approved a building permit for Michael Reschly to reroof his house at 311 W. Front Street.
The next meeting of the Wayland City Council will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m., at City Hall.
