Wayland council supports county jail project

WAYLAND ? Following a presentation Wednesday night by Henry County Chief Deputy Tracy Brooks on the proposed county law enforcement/jail project, the Wayland City Council voted unanimously to pass a resolution supporting the project.
County voters will cast ballots on the bond referendum Tuesday, Aug. 1. A 60-percent affirmative vote is needed for approval. The project is estimated to cost approximately $9.1 million and the proposed site is on county-owned land near the former county home.
Council members also passed a resolution approving salary increases for city employees effective July 1. City full-time employees will receive an average salary increase of 3 percent while part-time workers will get a 50-cent per-hour increase.
Approval was granted for the purchase of 2017 Arrow forks for the backhoe from Martin Equipment of Rock Island, Ill., at a cost of $1,550.
The city will enter into a financial services pact with Piper Jaffrey on the sewer project. Piper Jaffrey will be paid an amount not to exceed $4,000.
In a final purchase, the council approved the purchase of one block of time from Shift9 Labs of Muscatine to install the new computer system at city hall. A block of time costs $95 per hour.
A building permit for Norman Boshart to re-side his house and garage, replace seven windows and remove an existing deck was approved.
Wayland council members meet again in regular session Wednesday, July 5, at 7:30 p.m., at City Hall.
