WAYLAND ? With the 2017 Indpendence Day in the books, the Wayland City Council discussed the impact of the city?s fireworks ordinance during the council?s July 5 regular meeting.
City Clerk Bev Conrad said the city received minimal complaints on the discharging of fireworks in the community prior to and through the July 4 holiday.
Consequently, the council opted to make no changes in the ordinance at this time but said they would review the law again at a later date.
Council members approved having Mayor Bradley Roth sign a project agreement with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for removal of asbestos from a city-owned building located at 211-213 West Main in the city. Under terms of the agreement, the city will receive a $6,000 state grant for asbestos removal from the building. The city had an inspection of the building last year and inspectors estimated the cost of asbestos removal at $6,000.
Asbestos must be removed by Nov. 1. Following its removal, the city will have the building torn down.
Approval was given for the monthly payment for Jones Contracting Corporation which is doing the reconstruction work of Cummings Street. Conrad said infrastructure work is nearly completed and paving could begin as early as the end of this week.
The annual fire department report/roster was received.
Council members meet next in regular session on Wednesday, July 19, at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.
