WAYLAND ? A gas pipe replacement was the hot topic Wednesday night during the Wayland City Council meeting.
Barry Leichty, gas superintendent, said there had been a water leak on lot five of the mobile home park on East Railroad Street. When crews began digging down, it revealed plastic PVC pipe. Leichty said a new riser, attachments and shut-off valves would be installed for each of the six trailers.
Leichty said the most difficult part of the process would be getting to the valves, as there are bushes and fences in the way.
The council approved the replacements.
The council also discussed Police Chief Ron Roth issuing tickets for unauthorized vehicles on city streets. Roth said there has been an uptick in ATVs and other unauthorized vehicles in town; specifically around the gas station.
Utility vehicles used for farm work are allowed to drive to refueling stations, however, Roth said that doesn?t include picking up a pizza for lunch. Roth said he has been giving verbal warnings, but after a brief consultation with City Attorney Mike Vance, will begin handing out written warnings. ?After one warning I?m writing a citation,? he said.
In other police matters, part-time officer Tracy Brooks handed in his letter of resignation. His resignation was approved, as he had not received any hours in over a year.
In other business, the council:
? Approved a nuisance mowing lien against real estate.
? Approved the Road Use Tax report to be filed with the Iowa Department of Transportation prior to Sept. 30.
? Approved the renewal applications for Class C beer permit for Wayland BP and Cobb Oil.
? Authorized David Sterba to re-roof the house and re-side the shed at 314 East Main St.
? Approved the removal and replacement of the existing garage with an 18?X12? wood frame garage and expand the front porch by 18? on each side at the home of Rich Nebel at 204 East Main St.
? Denied the building permit for Gary and Lori Messer for a 12? X 28? X 10? frame house addition to the house at 207 Depot St., as it does not meet front setback guidelines. City Clerk Beverly Conrad said an appeal has been filed with the Board of Adjustments.
The next meeting of the Wayland City Council will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at 7:30 p.m., at City Hall.
