Mt. Pleasant?s Community Band will play its first concert of the season in the square tonight, June 9, at 7:00 p.m.
The band has been performing every summer since the mid-90s, when Steve Rod, who was the middle school band director, organized the group. Adam Creager, current middle school and community band director, played for Rod in both ensembles.
Mt. Pleasant?s band is comprised of 25 members on average, from age 13 to senior citizens. The group gets together for practice on Tuesdays and then performs an outdoor concert each Thursday in June, as well as the first Thursday in July, unless cancelled by rain.
?We encourage people to come out and listen; we love to perform,? Creager said.
This week, Creager has selected music from The Music Man, as well as songs by Andrew Lloyd Weber, Karl King, and more. In following concerts, he plans to have the band play everything from The Blues Brothers to music by John Williams to songs from the musical Chicago.
To join the band, email Creager at creagera@mt-pleasant.k12.ia.us, or call him at home: 385-3254.
?We?re always looking for new members,? Creager said.
He does recommend that band members are in seventh grade or above, because younger students will likely not be at the playing level required for the music.
