Fresh out of a successful book drive and into spring, the Wellman-Scofield Public library made an inspired choice in its activity kit display, repackaging the collection into Easter baskets.
“It was the Easter season, and I wanted parents to have a better idea visually of what was inside of them,” Children’s Librarian Lisa Lundstrom said. “I wanted to give them ideas of what they could do for Easter for their kids.”
The seasonal change came on the heels of a book drive that Lundstrom said brought over $400 worth of children’s books to the library.
“With those rewards, we specifically ordered some new items for our activity kits plus purchased a few more items,” she said. “Each kit has a theme to it, so we went through and we added some new books, we created some new kits.”
Lundstrom said the activity kits were popular with patrons, whose kids were in the 2-5 age range.
“They’re just a great way to read with your child and engage them and to practice some hands on skills, or play with them while reading to get them enjoying that time,” she said. “Children learn the most through play. So it’s allowing them to learn through play, and also have that bonding experience reading with an adult.”
On top of that bonding experience, Lundstrom said the kit material was great exposure for kids.
“Reading to a child is very important, especially in those early years, and it helps develop their language skills,” she said. “Even if the child isn’t reading themselves yet, it’s good to be read to. And it gives parents a chance to have activities already set up for them rather than having to think of something … it gives them something readily available that they can do together.”
