With Henry County Sheriff Allen Wittmer?s announcement that he is resigning his position Nov. 10, 2012, what happens with the election?
County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Shelley Barber said that if Wittmer defeats challenger Rich McNamee in the Nov. 6 general election, the position would be treated as a vacancy. McNamee would not automatically become sheriff.
The position could be filled by appointment (by the county board of supervisors) or through a special election, if requested by a petition from constituents.
Those interested in the position must submit letters to the supervisors requesting appointment.
Henry County Board of Supervisors would actually have two vacancies to fill (if Wittmer won the election) ? one until Wittmer?s term finishes (Dec. 31, 2012) and another for the subsequent term.
If appointed, the appointment would be effective until the next county general election, which would be in 2014.
