Participants in the Henry County Fair Queen Contest can reach for the stars following an incredibly successful first year where the contest was directed by sisters Kelsey DeWitt, Kirsten Smith, and Kenna Smith.
The sisters’ first year contained noteworthy moments including Kalayna Durr taking the crown after returning to the stage in the Wright Pavilion for a second interview question to help judges make a tough decision. That extra question paid off, and under the guidance of the Smith sisters, Durr went on to nab the 2023 Iowa State Fair Queen title.
The fair queen contest is an opportunity for young women between 8-21 years old residing, attending school, or participating in a 4-H Club in Henry County to showcase their best selves on stage during the fair in hopes of gaining one of three titles: Henry County Fair Princess, Henry County Fair Junior Queen and Henry County Fair Queen.
The youngest contestants, ranging from 8-11 years old will compete in interview questions and a party attire category for the chance to earn the title of 2024 Henry County Fair Princess. Contestants vying for the crown of Junior Queen will consist of young ladies between 12-15 years old. They will compete in offstage interview, causal wear, and party attire categories for their chance at a crown.
The oldest participants, young women ranging from 16-21 years old, will compete in the categories of interview, casual wear, evening wear, and onstage questions for the Henry County Fair Queen title. The stakes for those in the queen contest are greater than the younger hopefuls, because winning 2024 Henry County Fair Queen means they are one step closer to following the example of Durr and possibly winning State Fair Queen, as well.
To cheer on your favorite contestant and witness these young women put their best selves forward, grab a seat in the Wright Pavilion Wednesday, July 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Henry County Fair.
