Williamsburg man arrested after high-speed chase

WASHINGTON, Iowa (GTNS) ? According to court records, Tyler Myers had two juveniles in his vehicle during a high-speed chase with Washington County Sheriff?s deputies that lasted about 45 minutes and ended in Iowa County.

Myers, 21, of Williamsburg, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, two counts of child endangerment, felony eluding, no valid driver?s license, criminal mischief, no proof of insurance, nine counts of failure to obey a stop sign, careless driving, reckless driving and speeding. He is being held in the Washington County jail in leau of $25,000 bond.

According to the criminal complaint, Deputy Nathan Schmuecker had attempted to stop a 1993 Ford Explorer at Highway 22 and First Avenue in Wellman for a traffic violation. The report says that after the marked sheriff?s vehicle activated its lights and siren, the Explorer continued westbound on Third Street without stopping. The report also said the driver of the vehicle accelerated to a speed greater than 65 mph in a posted 25 mph zone. The driver reportedly ran through stop signs at Third Street, Seventh Avenue, Eighth Avenue and Ninth Avenue at the high speed.

?At the intersection of Eighth Avenue (Freeman Foods), there were observed multiple pedestrians in and/or about the area,? the report said.

The report said the vehicle ?bottomed out? at Ninth Avenue, causing the spare tire located under the vehicle to snap free and strike an unattended Ford Ranger, causing about $1,000 damage.

The pursuit reportedly continued through the northwestern part of rural Washington County and proceeded northbound onto Dogwood Avenue, north of Highway 22, there the vehicle became airborne and nearly struck a stopped truck and nearly rolled itself.

Schmuecker reported the pursuit continued into rural Iowa County. Iowa County sheriff?s deputies assisted. The pursuit continued past F52 in Iowa County and came to an end at about Q Boulevard, north of 270th Avenue, in rural Iowa County. The pursuit reportedly lasted about 45 minutes.

The report said a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance that field-tested positive for marijuana was found in the middle console area on the operator?s side.

Two juvenile passengers, ages 15 and 16 were inside the vehicle.

During his first appearance on the misdemeanor charges Tuesday, Myers pleaded not guilty.

A trial date has been set for Jan. 14.
