Winfield man sent prison on federal firearms charges

DAVENPORT ? A Winfield man was sentenced Thursday to 50 months of imprisonment stemming from his conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Charles Thomas Petro, 58, was sentenced to the term in U.S. District Court by U.S. District Judge John A. Jarvey. Petrol was also sentenced to three years of supervised release following imprisonment and ordered to pay $100 to the Crime Victim?s Fund.

According to court records, law enforcement in Henry County was called to Petro?s residence on June 19, 2011, by Petro?s granddaughter, who stated that Petro had pointed a gun at her and that he was engaged in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.

Police officers arrived at the residence and took Petro into custody. Police officers fond 10 20-gauge shotgun shells in Petro?s pants and found several firearms and a quantity of ammunition in Petro?s bedroom.

It was determined Petro had brandished a shotgun in the house after an argument that started at a nearby bar.

Petro was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, a felony offense, on Feb. 3, 1986, in Wayne County District Court and sentenced up to 10 years of imprisonment on that charge.

The case was investigated by the Winfield and New London Police Departments, the Henry County Sheriff?s Office, the Iowa State Patrol and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and was prosecuted by the United States Attorney?s Office, southern district of Iowa.
