Winfield man sentenced on federal firearms charges

DAVENPORT ? Charles Thomas Petro, 58, of Winfield was sentenced to 50 months of imprisonment Thursday stemming from his conviction for felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

United States District Judge John A. Jarvey also sentenced Petro to three years of supervised release following imprisonment and ordered him to pay $100 to the Crime Victim?s Fund.

Law enforcement in Henry County were called to Petro?s residence June 19 based on a call from Petro?s granddaughter, who stated Petro had pointed a gun at her and he was engaged in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. Police officers arrived at the residence and took Petro into custody.

Police officers found ten 20-gauge shotgun shells in Petro?s pants pockets and found several firearms and a quantity of ammunition in Petro?s bedroom. It was determined Petro had brandished a shotgun in the house after an argument that started at a nearby bar.

Petro was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, a felony offense, Feb. 3, 1986, in district court in Wayne County and sentenced to up to 10 years of imprisonment on that charge.

This case was investigated by the Winfield and New London Police departments, Henry County Sheriff?s Office, Iowa State Patrol and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and was prosecuted by the United States Attorney?s Office, Southern District of Iowa.
