WINFIELD ? The Winfield Public Library?s roof has sprung a few leaks, which are damaging some books inside the library.
That?s what members of the library board told the Winfield City Council during the council?s regular meeting on Feb. 10 (the meeting was moved from Feb. 8 to Feb. 10 due to a scheduling conflict).
After discussing the matter with the library board representatives, the council approved a motion to seek proposals from contractors regarding the roof. The council did not indicate whether it will repair or replace the roof, saying it would depend on the advice of the contractors for the final determination.
A nuisance abatement, which has been in the works since the summer, was approved with Richard Hughes, owner of a house at 108 N. Olive St. To abate the nuisance, the city is asking Hughes to remove two porches, repair the roof and a turret.
Hughes has had the porches removed and is seeking bids on the other repairs. The council gave Hughes until May 9 to have the work completed.
Council members set the salary for Chad Venghaus, new public works director, at $20.81 per hour. Venhaus formerly was assistant public works director. The council is seeking two additional workers for the department and has set an application deadline of Monday, Feb. 15.
In other action, the council heard presentations by the Winfield-Mt. Union Post Prom Committee and Crooked Creek Days Committee.
The council voted to donate $150 for post-prom activities.
Crooked Creek Days Committee members said ?Vegas Nights? has been selected as the theme for the annual celebration the first weekend of August. The Crooked Creek Days adult softball tournament has also been moved to the last weekend in July and will serve as a fundraiser for the celebration.
A donation of $1,000 toward fireworks for the celebration received council approval.
The council approved a resolution granting tax abatement for home improvements to a property at 312 S. Walnut St.
A public hearing for the fiscal year 2017 budget was set for Monday, March 14, at 5 p.m., the date and time of the next regular council meeting at City Hall.
