Winfield teachers wear pink to remember, support colleague

WINFIELD - In October, the Winfield-Mt. Union Community School District teachers and staff wear pink.

Last week, members of the district sported pink T-shirts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month and in support of district instructional coach Patricia Jones. The teachers wore the custom shirts, designed by Jones' daughter Claire, a senior attending New London High School, to bring awareness to the disease.

'It was a simple gesture, but one that truly warms my heart,” Jones said.

The instructional coach was diagnosed on March 13 and has since undergone 12 weekly chemotherapy treatments. To fight the cancer, Jones has completed surgery and is now doing daily radiation treatments along with chemotherapy every three weeks.

In addition to the day of awareness, Jones said the staff has been sending cards and messages of encouragement throughout her journey with cancer.

'It's days like this one that not only helps support and encourage my fight, but also gives fight to many other women that are going through their battle with breast cancer,” she said.
