WASHINGTON — The ISU Extension & Outreach Office, along with the Washington County Women in Agriculture Advisory Board, will hold a “farm crawl” event Friday, Aug. 22, according to a press release.
“This event is a great opportunity for women in agriculture to network and learn from various farming operations together,” said Rebecca Vittetoe, an extension field agronomist for Iowa State.
According to that release, the event will take participants by bus to four locations in Washington and Johnson counties, including:
- West Fork Farmstead, West Chester — A multigenerational family farm that’s used diversification to attract the next generation back to the farm. The farm is operated by Brian and Nancy Wilson along with their daughters, Claire and Natasha. They produce grass-fed beef, heritage pork, pastured chicken and duck eggs, pastured broilers and raw honey.
- Twin County Produce Auction and Stringtown Grocery, Kalona — A brief stop at the Twin County Produce Auction will be followed by a trip to the nearby Stringtown Grocery, an Amish store.
- Miller Homestead Cooking, Kalona (lunch) — Enjoy a traditional Amish meal while learning about the Amish community. Jams and homemade bread will be available for purchase.
- HB Flowers and Beef LLC, Tiffin — The final stop will be at a local family farm that produces homegrown flowers and local beef. Owners of HB Flowers and Beef LLC will share about their farm and their passion for cut flowers. Cut flower arrangements will be available for purchase following the tour.
Organizers say registration for the Women in Ag Farm Crawl is due by Aug. 14, and costs $50 to cover attendance, transportation and food. The bus is scheduled to begin loading around 8 a.m. at the extension office in Washington Aug. 22, and will depart promptly at 8:30 a.m. It’s scheduled to return by 4 p.m. the same day.
Those interested can register using a link in the online version of this article, or by calling the extension office at 319-653-4811.
