Both local and visiting disc golfers will soon have some new equipment to break in at the Woodland Disc Golf Course in Mt. Pleasant.
?This is the third year of the course,? said Henry County Conservation Director, John Pullis, as he explained the need for new baskets for the disc golf course to members of the county conservation board during their monthly meeting on Monday evening. ?We have been using used baskets since the course was made, and we really need new ones for two big upcoming (disc golf) events.?
The new baskets, along with the sockets they are placed in, will cost roughly $3,500. According to Pullis, because this was a perceived need, the money for the course was already figured into the year?s budget.
?When we built the course, there was no telling how much it would get used, but since it was made, it?s really taken off. I think this is something that will benefit us as this course is used often for tournaments and just for everyday golfers,? said Pullis.
The board approved the purchase.
In other happenings regarding the relatively short meeting on Monday was a review of a recent visit from a large canoeing party that spent Memorial Day weekend at Gibson Recreational Area.
?There ended up being about 70-plus canoers,? said Pullis, who praised the group as being very respectful to Henry County Conservation staff as well as to the campground. ?They left the campground spotless and said they want to come back next year, which I think is great.?
Pullis also reported that the group made a $200 donation to the department and paid the department for firewood they used over the weekend.
In other business, the board:
? Approved the extension of a custodial contract for Kitty Brooks, giving her a $1 per hour pay increase. Brooks? new contract was approved for $21 per hour.
? Approved wildlife food plots of corn and beans at Ketcham Switch.
? Approved officer rations effective next month, making board member Michelle Gardner board president and board member Kat Zeglan vice president.
Upon adjournment of the regular meeting, the board entered into a work session to review the department?s comprehensive plan. The next Henry County Conservation Board meeting will be held on Monday, July 11, at 6 p.m., at the Henry County Conservation board room.
