FAIRFIELD – Children at Word of Life Lutheran Church in Fairfield performed an act of kindness during their Vacation Bible School by packing birthday bags for The Lord’s Cupboard.
Brittany Metcalf, leader of the church’s VBS, said the children packed the bags on July 28, and then her grandmother Linda Burger and Lori Fry delivered them to The Lord’s Cupboard the following day. Metcalf said she got the idea to involve VBS kids in this activity after she saw Sue Carr post about it on social media, encouraging people to put together birthday bags. The bags have everything needed to throw a birthday party: a cake pan, cake mix, frosting, candles, balloons, plates, party favors and decorations.
The Lord’s Cupboard Executive Director Susan Frey said she was very grateful to receive 48 birthday bags from the Word of Life Lutheran Church.
“The birthday bags were all unique and had so many different varieties of fun items to complete a birthday party for each child,” she said. “Children ages 1-17 are offered a birthday bag for their special day. It is such a joy to the family and often the kids are here to pick out their special gift. We appreciate all the donations from our community and hope to carry on this wonderful tradition.”
Metcalf is in her first year of leading VBS, and she just recently began teaching Sunday School. She has fond memories of going to VBS, and that’s something her own children, a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, can look forward to as well. Metcalf said the packing went quickly, just 30 minutes, because they had the young children partner with an older child or an adult who helped them go through the line, picking up a certain number of items at each station to make a complete birthday bag.
Word of Life Lutheran Church has several committees, and one of those is the Outreach Committee. The Outreach Committee selects special projects to fund, where part of the offering goes to that project, or the committee will have a bucket set aside for that fund. The Outreach Committee decided that part of the offerings should fund The Lord’s Cupboard birthday bag program.
