Shipley Contracting of Burlington will begin work on the North Iris Street project Monday, April 7, according to Warner Engineering Associates, Inc., engineering firm for the project.
Quality Traffic Control will be setting up traffic control early Monday morning and Iris Street will be closed to through traffic from Mapleaf Drive to Winfield Avenue.
It is anticipated that the closure will extend 30 days, largely dependent upon the weather.
Walmart Distribution will be using an entrance from Mapleleaf Drive for inbound truck traffic and will use the south truck exit onto Iris Street for outbound truck traffic. An entrance along the east side of Walmart Distribution?s building to the north entrance onto Iris Street will be left open for Walmart Distribution drivers to enter the parking area in their personal vehicles. This entrance will be for Walmart use only, no traffic will be allowed north of the Walmart entrance to Winfield Avenue.
City of Mt. Pleasant workers will be erecting detour signs this week to direct traffic from Mapleleaf Drive to Grand Avenue, north on Grand Avenue to Winfield Avenue. Iris Street will remain open initially from Washington to Mapleleaf Drive.
The Iris Street project will be divided into five phases and access will be available to all businesses during the duration of the project. The contract between the city and Shipley is for 95 working days.
As phases change, updates will be published in The News.
The first phase includes Shipley milling the asphalt from the surface of the existing street. Midwest Contractors will be patching deteriorating spots before Shipley places a six-inch thick unbounded white topping over the existing surface.
Cole Construction will be replacing a 36-inch CMP culvert and DeLong Construction will be placing a subdrain on both sides of Iris Street.
The entire section, Warner said, will be completed before opening to traffic by May 15.
Cole Construction also will be starting storm sewer work at the northwest corner of Mt. Pleasant Foods and also installing storm sewer in the Mapleleaf Drive right-of-way east to Iris Street, west to the east ditch of Iris Street and south to Commerce Drive.
