The Iowa Department of Transportation began a bridge project on April 5 to replace the eastbound U.S. 34 bridge over the Skunk River, 2.6 miles west of Westwood. Construction is anticipated to be completed in November, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Fairfield construction office.
The existing eastbound I-beam bridge will be replaced with a concrete beam bridge.
Traffic will be maintained using two median one-lane crossovers during replacement of the eastbound U.S. 34 bridge. Eastbound and westbound traffic will be placed in a head-to-head traffic pattern on the westbound lanes of U.S. 34 until November. A weight limit of 156,000 lbs. and an axle load limit of 20,000 lbs. is in effect.
While bridge work is being performed on the U.S. 34 bridge, boat traffic on the Skunk River under the U.S. 34 bridges will be restricted.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.
