A water heater issue prompted the Washington County YMCA to close its indoor pool this week, rescheduling swimming activities from Tuesday through Thursday morning.
“With this particular issue, it’s really just a normal wear and tear issue, it’s the rusting of a part,” YMCA of Washington County CEO Amy Schulte said. “Over time, that’s just going to happen, pools are really expensive to maintain and to run.”
Schulte said a new part for the heating unit was expected Thursday morning, the fifth repair requiring a shutdown since November last year.
Schulte said she hoped it was the last repair the pool would need for a while, but was cautious about getting her hopes up.
“We take constant care of it and we have our eyes on it all the time,” she said. “I think this highlights the challenges that we continue to have with the pool and the age that it is. Our concern and the board’s concern is that it’s going to be a recurring issue until we can retire the pool and open a new one.”
