MOUNT PLEASANT ? Alice Dennis, 94, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of the Washington and Coralville communities, died Monday, April 18, 2016, in Arbor Court.
A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 22, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, where the family will greet friends. A celebration of life service will begin at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the church with the Rev. Mike Hess officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. Memorials have been established to Calvary Baptist Church for the choir or missions, and HCI Hospice Care Services. Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Dennis was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Washington, the daughter of Glen and Edith (Doran) Gonder. She married Barnard W. Dennis on June 14, 1947.
She grew up in Coralville and graduated from the University High School in Iowa City. She continued her education with two years of secretarial college. She and her husband raised their four children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. She was a founding member of the Coralville Bible Church, which later became Coralville Evangelical Free Church and then the present Parkview Church in Iowa City. She devoted her life to her family, and served faithfully as an organist, pianist, Sunday school superintendent, teacher and choir member through the years at the Coralville Evangelical Free Church. She enjoyed tending a large garden, was a Cub Scout den mother, and sang in the Coralville Community Chorus. She periodically worked outside the home in ACT pre-scoring at Westinghouse in Iowa City. She retired and moved to Mount Pleasant in 1994 and became a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Surviving are four children, Mary Edith Heidbreder of Danville, Barnard Dennis and wife Jean of Rochester, New Hampshire, Marcia Lantz and husband Gary of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and Donald Dennis and wife Cathy of Victoria, Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Barnard, in 1980; her parents; one sister, Marie Jadrnicek; her stepfather, Floyd Kelley; and one son-in-law, Ronald Heidbreder.
