LONE TREE ? Alvin George Schnoebelen, 97, of Lone Tree, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, in Pioneer Park in Lone Tree.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 22, at St. Mary?s Church in Lone Tree. Immediately following the services at the church, military rites will be conducted by the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery at a later date. Following the services, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion. Visitation will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree, with a 4:30 p.m. prayer service. Memorials may be directed to the Lone Tree Fire and Rescue or the Lone Tree American Legion.
Mr. Schnoebelen was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Riverside, the son of George T. and Mary E. (Heitzman) Schnoebelen. He married Betty Beryl Stock on Feb. 3, 1944, in Iowa City.
He served in the Navy during World War II from June 1942 to August 1945, attaining the rank of radar man third class. During his time in the Navy, he was in Europe, the South Pacific, North Africa and the Philippines. He and his wife were the owners and operators of the Schnoebelen Service Station from 1945 to 1982. He was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church of Lone Tree, Lone Tree American Legion Post 457 for 70 years, and Lone Tree Fire Department for 35 years, and he was a past member of the Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce and City Council. He enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, playing cards, and wood crafts, but most of all spending time with family and friends, especially the grandchildren.
Surviving are three children, Douglas Schnoebelen of Wapello, Karen Christianson and husband David of Davenport, and Robert Schnoebelen and wife Mary Jo of Lone Tree; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five siblings, Zelma Burr of Lone Tree, Dorothy Johnson of Washington, Delores Kempf of Iowa City, Frances Self of Phoenix, Arizona, and Anita Mehaffey of Vermillion, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Herb, and Vern; and one sister, Coletta Stacher.
