BERNICE (NICKELL) COMMERS
Wellman
Bernice (Nickell) Commers was born July 28, 1914, in Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of Earnest and Mable (Walton) Wetrich. She graduated from Wellman
High School in 1932.
Bernice was united in marriage to Verlin Nickell on June 20, 1936, in Monticello, Missouri. To this union they were blessed with three children. He later died October 1, 1960. She later was married to Richard Commers on July 7, 1970. He died January 1, 1975. She was a country school teacher and later taught Special Ed for a total of 32 years before retiring in 1980. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wellman, the Rebekah Lodge, Heritage Agency on Aging and the cancer board along with many other volunteer services in the community. She enjoyed family, reading, traveling, church, friends at the senior center, but her greatest passion was serving others.
Bernice passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, at Parkview Manor in Wellman, at the age of 106.
She is survived by three children, Nancy (Gene) Scott of Wellman, Bill (LaVerna) Nickell of Wellman and Linda (Tom) Winterburn of Corinth, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Carol Glass, Donna Ford, David Scott, Jeff Capper, Eric Capper, Lisa Cole, James Nickell, Todd Winterburn, Scott Winterburn and Kristi Kersey; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, a brother, Ward Wetrich and two great-grandchildren.
Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, at the First Baptist Church in Wellman. The service will be life streamed on our face book page or website. Burial is in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Please practice social distancing and masks are required.
