Beryl was born May 5, 1952, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Lester and Juanita (Miller) Butterbaugh. He lived most of his life in Washington County between West Chester, Kalona and Washington. He was a 1970 graduate of Mid-Prairie High School. During and after high school, Beryl worked for Wes Burrows Roofing in Kalona and Eugene Lynn Division Construction in West Chester.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1972 and served in the military police at Fort Richardson, Alaska, where he started his career in law enforcement. After his military service, he worked as a corrections officer for the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Oakdale, Iowa. Beryl served in multiple positions during his 35-year career with the Washington County Sheriff's Department, many of those years as a patrol sergeant supervisor. After retirement, Beryl worked parttime for the City of Washington Police Department and for the Washington County Hospital and Clinics under materials management as a courier.
Beryl enjoyed '60-'70s rock 'n' roll, camping and boating, especially at the Lake of the Ozarks, channel surfing, spending time with family and friends, and tri-five '55, '56 and '57' Chevys, having owned one or two of each. One of his fondest things to do was cutting cookies in the snow as a teenager-adult in downtown West Chester. Beryl never outgrew cutting cookies in the snow.
In recent years, he enjoyed going on weekend road trips, going on outings with his close friends and family, and spending time with his loving friend, Jennine Wolf.
Beryl was a Patriot Life Endowment member of the National Rifle Association, the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputy Association and the National Sheriffs' Association. He was a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and standing for the national anthem.
Beryl is survived by his brother, Leslie Butterbaugh and wife, Jo, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; loving friend, Jennine Wolf of Washington, Iowa; and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
