COLUMBUS JUNCTION -- Betty Jean Chatfield, 94, of Columbus Junction, died Tuesday, May 30, 2017, in Bickford Cottage, Muscatine.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 3, at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. A general memorial has been established at the funeral home.
Mrs. Chatfield was born May 10, 1923, in Letts, the daughter of Gale and Mildred (Hahn) Smith. She married Vernon L. Chatfield in August 1941 in Missouri.
She graduated from the Columbus Junction High School in 1940. She was a member of Hope Bible Church, where she played the piano and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau. She enjoyed mowing her lawn; gardening; farming; leading a Bible club called Child Evangelism in Columbus Junction, Conesville and Fredonia; and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.
Surviving are three children, Leonard Chatfield and wife Carol of Columbus Junction, Janet Martz and husband Larry of Muscatine, and Imogene Weiland and husband Dale of Osceola; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Raymond G. Smith and wife Betty Lou of Columbus Junction, and Lyle Smith and wife Audrey of Columbus Junction.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandchild; and one sister, Verlee Pierce Wells.
