Betty Ellen Strum, 101, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Kalona, Iowa, died Thursday, August 17, 2023, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2023, with a graveside service to follow at Elm Grove Cemetery. Betty was born October 31, 1921, in Ainsworth, Iowa, the daughter of William Charles and Mayme Mae (Longer) Kolosick. She attended country school in rural Washington County before graduating from Washington High School. Betty was united in marriage to Harold E. Strum on September 30, 1939, in Memphis, Missouri.

Betty lived all of her life in Washington County having lived on the farm southeast of Richmond for over 70 years. She worked for Gifford Morrison for seven years and then raised her family while assisting her husband on the family farm. Betty later did bookkeeping at the University of Iowa. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the HJ Neighborhood Club, Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine. Betty enjoyed gardening and taking care of her flowers.

She is survived by her daughter, Barb Brown of Riverside, Iowa; son, Bill Strum of Kalona, Iowa; grandson, Jeff Stannard of Appleton, Wisconsin; granddaughter, Jodi Klebe and husband Kevin of Riverside, Iowa; and four great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband in 2010; sister, Mildred LeFever; and son-in-law, Steve Brown.
