Betty J. Groene

Betty J. Groene, 64, of Burlington, formerly of Donnellson, passed away at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Visitation will begin at noon Friday, Feb. 22, at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory in Donnellson; the family will meet with friends from 5 to 8 p.m. A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West Point, with the Rev. Apo T. Mpanda as celebrant. Burial will be at the Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson.

A memorial has been established in her memory.

She was born Oct. 27, 1943 in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Shirl Morton and Barbara E. Soiberg Holloway. On Dec. 16, 1962, she married John L. Groene in West Point.

Survivors include her husband John of Burlington; two daughters, Ann Groene of Burlington and Elizabeth Frueh and her husband Eric of Donnellson; one son, John Groene and his wife Angela of Eldridge; one sister, Carol Schwab and her husband Richard of Donnellson; two grandchildren, Travis Keeney and Sydney Groene, several aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and one uncle.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Betty was a cosmetologist for over 40 years, having owned and operated Betty's Beauty Shop. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Burlington. While living in Donnellson she was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington, where she taught CCD. She was a member of the Burlington Chapter TTT and a past member of the Donnellson Chapter TTT. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, traveling, walking and doing yard work. She was an avid reader, she always tended to the needs of others. Above all, Betty loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. Betty was a true example of a Christian.
