Beverly was born on March 30, 1928, in Marcus, Iowa, the daughter of Harold Paul and Marguerite Irene Toner. She attended school in LeMars and Sioux City, graduating from Sioux City East High School. On July 4, 1952, Bev was united in marriage to Malcolm Brodie in Dubuque, Iowa. While Malcolm was in the service, the two lived in Kentucky and Fairbanks, Alaska, before returning to the family farm in Iowa. They moved to Washington, Iowa, in October of 2020.
Prior to her marriage, Bev worked as a Demonstration Specialist for International Harvester’s home appliance division, teaching cooking classes throughout the Midwest. In 1965, she began writing “Country Cooking,” a weekly column for the LeMars Sentinel, which later evolved into a series of three cookbooks. In the mid-1970s, Bev and Malcolm owned Brodie Equipment in Akron, Iowa.
Bev and Malcolm shared a love of dancing, fishing, and traveling. Bev was also passionate about researching family genealogy, as well as knitting, quilting, and cooking. She was particularly known for her homemade pies. Bev rarely missed her 5 o'clock scotch, loved attending social events, and enjoyed family gatherings at their cabin at Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada.
She is survived by her daughters, Kathlyn “Kate” Jones of Big Arm, Montana; Karen Andrew of Washington, Iowa; and Kim (Kelley Marcantel) Brodie of Boerne, Texas; six grandchildren: Rebecca Walseth, Jon Saienga, Emilee Jones, Ellyn Hildebrand, Robert Andrew, and Zach Marcantel; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon Hinde of Minneapolis, Minnesota; brother, Larry (Roseann) Toner of Grand Island, Nebraska; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bev was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Malcolm in 2024; grandson, Colton Marcantel; sons-in-law, Frank Jones and Michael Andrew; and sister, Bonnie Buresh.
