Beverly Garrels

MOUNT PLEASANT ? Beverly Elaine Garrels, 80, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, March 17, 2017, in Parkview Home in Wayland.

Visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 1, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel of Mount Pleasant. The family will meet with friends to celebrate her life that afternoon, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Memorial Chapel. According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded and a private family burial will be held at a later date at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa. Memorials have been established for the First United Methodist Church, Parkview Home in Wayland, or Hospice of Washington County.

Mrs. Garrels was born March 3, 1937, north of Mount Pleasant, the daughter of George and Edith (Cornwell) Stehl. She married Dale E. Garrels on Nov. 14, 1953, at her parents? home near Packwood.

She attended schools in Birmingham and Packwood. She worked as office manager for her husband?s dental offices in Mount Pleasant and Washington, and following his retirement in the office of Pioneer Hybrid. An active community member, she was a former member and served as president of T.T.T., Chapter DD; a member of P.E.O., Chapter OX; and volunteered and served as president of Henry County health Center Auxiliary. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and spent many hours volunteering in the church kitchen during funerals and Midwest Old Threshers. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends, tending her flowers and sharing her love of Broadway musicals. She was a devoted grandmother who always supported her grandchildren?s activities in sports and music.

Surviving are one son, Michael Garrels of Washington; two daughters, Becky Kauffman and husband Scott of Mount Pleasant, and Ellen Zanichelli of Evergreen, Colorado; five grandchildren; and one brother, Ronald Stehl and wife Janice of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, on July 23, 2006; her parents; and one nephew.
