BILLY MILTON MCCABE
New London
Billy Milton McCabe, 95, of New London, died and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2020.
He was born July 31, 1925, at St. Francis Hospital in Burlington, Iowa, to Frank Raymond and Margaret Bell Davis McCabe Giger. On March 9, 1947, he married the love of his life, Erma Jeanne Timmons in Clarence, Mo. He was a lifelong resident of New London. Bill attended Eagle #3 Country School until eighth grade and was a 1943 graduate of New London High School. He served as a Seabee in the Navy and was stationed in the U.S., the South Pacific and the Admiralty Islands during World War II. He was one of the first to travel to Washington, D.C., on the Honor Tour. He retired after working at General Electric, Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and New London Schools.
As a member of New London Christian Church, he taught and served as an elder and later a deacon. He loved reading the King James Version of the Bible. He enjoyed attending church, gardening, spending time with family, was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, and loved to travel while working for Earl Smith at Geode Industries.
Memories will live on through his wife; daughter, Margie (Bob) Sink of Danville; and son, WD McCabe of New London; grandchildren, Natasha (David) Montgomery of New Rochelle, N.Y., Kelly (Scott) Neff of New London, Jay (Becky) Eilers of West Burlington, Wendy (Eric) Wixom of Burlington, Angela McCabe of Edgewater, Colo., and Jenny (AJ Swartz) McCabe of Woonsocket, R.I.; 13 great-grandchildren; one step-great grandchild; one great-great granddaughter; three step-great-great grandchildren; three half sisters, Betty Wixom of New London, Karen McCabe and Minnie Shinn of Independence, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Grandfather Milton and Stepgrandmother Carrie who raised him; his parents; stepmother; stepfather; brothers, Charles and Robert; son, Ronald Dean McCabe; and daughter in infancy, Rena Clair McCabe.
The private family burial for Mr. McCabe will be at Burge Cemetery with military rites by Henry County Honor Guard. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at New London Christian Church with Pastors Rod and Nathan Cooper officiating. Friends may call beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Chapel with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Social distancing should be practiced and masks are recommended.
