WELLMAN ? Brian Richard Durst, 46, of West Point, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman with the Rev. Moody Colorado officiating. Burial will be at Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m., Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman is handling the arrangements.
Mr. Durst was born Oct. 21, 1968, in Iowa City, the son of Richard and Bonnie (Hutton) Durst. He married Diane Vinton on March 2, 1991. The couple later divorced.
He graduated from Keota High School in 1987. He was in the National Guard and Army Reserve. He did his basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and his Army medic training at Fort Sam Houston, where he graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. He started working for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1998 and worked his way up to becoming a conductor. He was currently stationed out of Fort Madison Union Pacific Railroad. He was an avid photographer. He always saw the beauty in everything, which was reflected in his photos. He enjoyed music, karaoke, trivia, debating the Bible, and golfing with his grandma Ruth, spending evenings with his friends at West Point and sitting around a campfire. He loved watching his niece and his two nephews in anything they did. He loved to travel and had been on several cruises. His last cruise was with his aunt, Jo Criss, to Alaska last year. He was a member of the NRA and Prairie Hunting Club.
Surviving are his mother, Bonnie Durst of Wellman; one sister, Heather Fox of Wellman; one niece; two nephews; his grandmother, Ruth Hutton of Sigourney; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Durst; one daughter, Iris Grace; and his grandparents, Aldus ?Shorty? Hutton, and John Durst Sr. and Bertha Durst.
