Carl Edward Hughes, Sr.
Carl Edward Hughes, Sr., 74, of 916 Glenwood in Ottumwa died April 13, 2000 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
The body has been cremated. The memorial service was at 1:30 p.m. today at the Shrine of Memories Funeral Home in Ottumwa, with the Chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars officiating. Burial of cremains with military rites will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. There is no visitation planned. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Hughes was born May 16, 1925, in Albia, the son of Fred R. and Inez Gibson Hughes. He married Reva Brooks in Albia in 1947. He married Emma Terrell in 1973 in Nashua. He served with the U.S. Army European Theatre in the 11th Armor-Anti-Aircraft division with George S. Patton's Third Army. He was a turret gunner. He worked as a clerk for the Burlington Northern Railroad from 1947 to 1992, when he retired. He was a member of the Walter B. Shafer Post #773, Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3, and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Carl, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant and Kelly Hughes of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Leanne Brockway of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; two step-daughters, Barbara Smith and Vicky Johnson, both of Ottumwa; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert (who died in Germany during WWII); and a daughter, Victoria Irene.
