Born on September 22, 1950 in Ottumwa to Cyril V. Brown and Helen McConaha Brown, Carol Ann grew up on the family farm near Ollie, where the values of hard work and compassion were woven into her character from an early age. She graduated from Pekin High School in 1968 and continued her journey at the University of Northern Iowa, earning a bachelor’s degree in teaching—a calling that would shape countless young minds in Fairfield’s middle school classrooms. On December 22, 1973 she married Roger Harrington in Fairfield and they started their lives together near Fairfield. After living at Iowa Falls for a few years, Roger and Carol Ann returned to Ollie and started farming and Carol Ann started teaching in Fairfield.
Teaching was more than a profession for Carol Ann, it was a way to nurture, inspire, and uplift. Her students remember her not just for her math lessons, but for her encouragement and genuine care. Even after retiring, she remained active, tutoring several local students and lending her expertise during tax season at TDT and Latta Harris and always finding ways to help on the farm. Rest was never her style; she thrived on purpose and connection.
Her devotion extended beyond work. As a member of Prairie View Church and the Prairie View Women, Carol Ann was a beacon of mission work and community care. She served on the Richland Library Board for many years.
Sports were another thread in her life, she excelled in basketball and softball at Pekin, and a lifelong love of watching the games. Friends and family will forever remember her cooking and baking ,especially pumpkin bread, dishes that brought people together and showcased her warmth as a host. Meals at home, family dinners, potlucks and even the field were always the best.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Roger Harrington, and the many friends and extended family who were blessed by her presence. Her legacy is one of action, kindness, and unwavering commitment to others. She was preceded in death by her parents.
